picture records work better than written ones

Post by oolala53 » Fri Mar 18, 2011 10:20 pm

Here is a link to a study on a different kind of record keeping of food intake. It reminds me that when I first started looking at this site, one of the participants had pics of her meals for about a year! She stopped posting because she felt she had learned to eat moderately and wanted to give her attention to other elements of life.

I know myself, though. When things get bad, I just stop recording! And I pay the price.

That's fascinating, and you know, I bet it would be a really interesting test.

Though I admit that the first thing I thought when I looked at that meal was that I want to make myself a dinner just like it because it looked so GOOD. Diet-schmiet, that looked delicious.

It did look good, and though we don't "care" around here, it wasn't high calorie, either.

Interesting.

Sounds as if the reasons it works better are multiple...
- Less work than writing (for some folks... not sure I'd think so)
- More visual presentation heightens awareness of quantity and quality. You SEE the portions, the amount of "green," etc.
- Possibly the attention to presentation makes the food more satisfying??

I do know that presentation matters. On days when I eat at my favorite deli bar, half my plate is salad, with lots of different veggies in it. Makes for a very colorful plate - and almost invariably, someone will comment on how "pretty" it is.

I also remember Blueskighs posting her plates - they looked so good!

For me, it would be harder to do that than to log in writing. I have a camera phone, but am backward about uploading photos.
