Simmstone's 'Obsessive Moderation'

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

July 2025

Goals:
No S = 80%
Wellness = 50%
1 Wellness session = 30 minutes focused training (weights/cardio) or physically active/functional/life tasks (dog walking hard yard work, etc)

Fri, 7/11: SUCCESS, Walking (Incline) - 45 minutes, Weight = 280.2
Sat, 7/12: S DAY, Walking (Incline) - 45 minutes
Sun, 7/13: S DAY
NOTES: That number on the scale is a big one. I hesitated to post it here, but it is a reflection of how far out of hand I have let things get... which isn't about a number (the number is just a symptom) - it reflects the lack of gratitude I have been living with for the last couple of years. But I have started to come out of that fog and realize that there is SO much to be grateful for - for starters, I have another day/another chance to honor my self-promise around eating, and, as Gillian Riley speaks about, regain my self-esteem.
So I am feeling inspired again. Onward. Upward.

Mon, 7/14: SUCCESS, Weight Training - 45 minutes
Tue, 7/15: FAIL, Walking (Incline) - 45 minutes
Wed, 7/16: FAIL, Wellness - 75 minutes yard work
Thu, 7/17: SUCCESS, Weight Training - 45 minutes
Fri, 7/18: SUCCESS
Sat, 7/19: S DAY, Wellness - 60 minutes dog walking
Sun, 7/20: S DAY, Wellness - 60 minutes dog walking
Notes: Not a perfect week, but much better than anything I've had in quite a while. Next week will be even better.

Mon, 7/21: SUCCESS, Weight Training - 45 minutes
Tue, 7/22: SUCCESS, Wellness - 60 minutes dog walking
Wed, 7/23: SUCCESS, Weight Training - 45 minutes
Thu, 7/24: FAIL, Wellness - 35 minutes dog walking
Fri, 7/25: NWS DAY, Wellness - 60 minutes dog walking
Sat, 7/26: S DAY
Sun, 7/27: S DAY
Notes: Every week has gotten better, so far. I am finally starting to come out of my fog.

Mon, 7/28: SUCCESS, Weight Training - 90 minutes
Tue, 7/29: SUCCESS, Wellness - 60 minutes dog walking
Wed, 7/30: SUCCESS, Weight Training - 75 minutes
Thu, 7/31: SUCCESS, Wellness - 35 minutes dog walking
Notes: What a difference 3 weeks can make - I feel in a totally different mindset than I was on 7/11. I can see the momentum building and confidence growing that I can regain what I've lost, in terms of my self-esteem, gratitude, hope, and joy - onward and upward in August!

I totally agree - onward and upward is the only way to go. What other option do we have?
Hang in there!

AUGUST 2025

I am focused on continuing my momentum from July and hoping for a fantastic August. Since making a concerted effort to reconnect to 3 meals per day on July 11th, there has been a clear mental shift for me, and I am back to the simplicity of NO S.

Goals:
No S = 80%
Wellness = 50%

1 Wellness session = 30+ minutes of either focused training (weights/cardio) or physically active/functional/life tasks (dog walking hard yard work, etc)

Fri, 8/1: SUCCESS, Weight Training, Weight = 265.8 lbs
Sat, 8/2: S DAY, Wellness - Dog Walking
Sun, 8/3: S DAY, Wellness - Dog Walking, Yard Work
NOTES: Already about 15 pounds down from the initial weigh in! It is amazing what happens with my body when I live in gratitude, refrain from binge eating, and move it a bit more. I'll keep weigh ins to the first Friday of every month, as I want to make the scale a background metric and keep my focus on hitting compliance goals.

Mon, 8/4: SUCCESS, Weight Training, DOH = 10
Tue, 8/5: SUCCESS, Wellness - Dog Walking, Yard Work
Wed, 8/6: SUCCESS, Weight Training
Thu, 8/7: SUCCESS
Fri, 8/8: SUCCESS, Weight Training
Sat, 8/9: S DAY, Wellness - 60 minutes dog walking
Sun, 8/10: S DAY, Wellness - 60 minutes dog walking
Notes: Another great week with no Failures - which makes two in row... first time in forever that I've been able to pull that off! :D

Mon, 8/11: SUCCESS, Weight Training
Tue, 8/12: SUCCESS
Wed, 8/13: SUCCESS, Weight Training
Thu, 8/14: FAIL
Fri, 8/15: NWS DAY, Weight Training
Sat, 8/16: S DAY
Sun, 8/17: S DAY
Notes: Traveled to my mom’s house for the weekend, so used a NWS Day on Friday

Mon, 8/18: SUCCESS, Weight Training
Tue, 8/19: SUCCESS
Wed, 8/20: FAIL, Weight Training
Thu, 8/21: SUCCESS
Fri, 8/22:
Sat, 8/23: S DAY
Sun, 8/24: S DAY
Notes:

Mon, 8/25:
Tue, 8/26:
Wed, 8/27:
Thu, 8/28:
Fri, 8/29:
Sat, 8/30: S DAY
Sun, 8/31: S DAY
