Floating S Days???
I read on an older thread that someone mentioned 'floating s days'. What exactly is this? I was wondering if it was giving yourself 8 available days a month to use as S days instead of keeping them every weekend? Part of me wants to try that, but then on the weekends I'll be missing my s days. Any thoughts? Anyone try a version of this? I'm 99% sure I'll just continue vanilla no s, but seeing that phrase made me think about it. Thanks!
I think floating S days are probably an advanced move, LOL!
Yes, when I think "floating S days," I think of S days that are different every week. The downside is that you don't have habit/routine on your side if every week is different. And, it's harder to have the power of looking forward to a reward on your side--or at least it was for me. Probably because I didn't have "set" S-days, but took them when "something came up."
My first go-around with No-S, I used floating S days. Sundays were always an S day but my other day floated. What I found was that I tended to want to add in more than one S day if something special came up, because I didn't have a rock-solid habit of saying, "this is an N day." I didn't have as much stamina to say no, and various things tripped me up. I kind of felt like any time someone served dessert, I should have some, because, well, my S days were floating. Plus, what if I took my S day on Wednesday, but something even greater came up on Friday?
So, I think to be successful with them, a person would need to really have firm boundaries. I like to negotiate with myself too much, LOL! I could see if someone had a flexing work schedule, and made the floating days work with their days off (if that made sense), that might work.
For me, not flexing on N days has made it easier for me to say no to the occasional treat that pops up. If I'm going to take an S day, or a red day for a treat, I make sure it's really important and special to me. And, I make sure my weekly reward on my first S day is special to me.
I do, however, have permanent S days that are slightly different--mine are Fridays and Sundays because that works better with my schedule.

Anyway--not saying don't try it, but I do think it's one of the things that led to No-S not working well for me the first time around, and led to me giving up on it.

Hi Maggie,
I tried floating S days in the early days and it was a real disaster. I kept using S days too quickly and then wishing I had more and that led to Red days. It really kept me from forming habits in an effective way!
What I do now is make specific trades from time to time. If I have a Saturday with nothing much going on, I may decide to make it an N day and then have an S day during the following week, when I have something going on with friends. Or I might decide to have an S event on a Friday, and then keep the following Sunday green. I got the idea from our founder, but it is kind of an advanced move. I would consider completely free floating S days to be ill advised for anyone!

No Sweets, No Snacks and No Seconds, Except (Sometimes) on days that start with "S".

Hi I just wrote about this on my check-in and it didn't work well for me. I thought it'd be fine since I've been at this awhile but just too much of a slippery slope. Too much mental energy needed to make it sustainable imo.
You can always try and see for yourself however. Vanilla nos will be waiting for you if you need it.

Honestly, from what I can tell from several years on here, success on non Vanilla is the exception. If we weren't in such food-rich environments, it could probably work to be more random, but it's just not habit-friendly because it involves a new level of having to keep track a bit.
And please remember that S days are really meant eventually to have ONE S event--SOMETIMES. A person doesn't have to eat all day for it to be an S day. So allowing for 8 S days a month as if there would be S's on all of them is technically allowable, but I doubt it would lead to the satisfaction with moderation that is so beneficial.
But sometimes trying other things and failing makes the commitment grow stronger. Trying them too soon could make it hard to come back.
