Sledgehammer too expensive and high-tech for you?

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

I'm a great believer in making do with what one has available. In this case, however, I wouldn't be able to decide if I was playing at being Sisyphus or Atlas.

For most of us urbanites, a sledgehammer would probably be easier to find and store than a big, dirty rock. How sad that we've lost our primal connection to rocks. Or something.

You could start selling them mail-order as fitness gear!

Return of the pet rock!

I can see how to market it already as an exercise companion:

"All the health benefits of walking your dog, without the poop."

There could be several levels of pet rock, depending on your current fitness level. Among others:

Ciwarock (5 pounds)
Bernese Mountain Rock (75 pounds)
Rockweiler (100 pounds)

Gallon jug works, too, and lets you adjust weight by adding or removing water.

These can also be accomplished with a sandbag. I made mine using a military surplus duffel bag, contractor's clean up bags, and paving sand (so it wasn't as fine if it leaked).
