Hey all. I'm new here.
I started noS yesterday with a SUCCESS.
I'm in a tough spot now though. I didn't eat enough for breakfast. I've had 2 glasses of water though, and it's helped a bit.
Just an hour until lunchtime.
I'll make it!

Welcome and congrats on your first green day.

Hot herbal tea really helps if you need to kill an hour of an empty stomach. Even hot water.

But it was difficult. Ate a small (normal to me) breakfast. Smallish lunch too. But I made it!

August 29, Day 3: SUCCESS!

Went for Indian Tapas with my wife and brother and sister in law.
THAT was a challenge! I'm a sucker for everything Indian.

I one-plated that place like a CHAMP! YEAH!

August 30th, Day 4: SUCCESS!

My wife and daughter were away, so the evening no-snacking was difficult.
Had a tea and no snacks.

September 1, Day 6: S DAY - root beer, and a burger and fries. All meals one plate. Didn't even snack.
September 2, Day 7: S DAY - Ice cream. Multi-plate late breakfast, no lunch. No snacks.
September 3, Day 8: S DAY - Chocolate cake in the middle of the afternoon. All meals one plate.

Do people treat Statutory Holidays as S-Days? I wasn't sure...

It's my first time trying anything like this. I've been slowly putting on weight over the last 15 years or so.

My weaknesses are the late-night binge of shame when my wife is asleep, and the mindless snacking at work. My portions might be a bit much, but Snacks are my nemesis!

September 5th, Day 10: SUCCESS!

I'm going to weigh myself tomorrow AM.
I was scale-obsessed for the first few days, so my wife confiscated the scale. I'm only allowed once per week, on Friday morning.

I've been going to Tae Kwon Do classes for the past 8 months or so, and I'm having a blast. The school is very supportive, low-key, and welcoming. 6:00 AM Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8AM Saturdays with my 6-year-old daughter.

And I've been biking to work for the last 6 years. 12Km in the AM, and 12Km in the PM.

All told, I get a crapload of exercise. I just eat too much - and that's why I think noS is perfect for me!

September 6th, Day 11: SUCCESS!

Stepped on the scale this AM. 229.5lbs
Lost 10lbs in 2 weeks.
That was not the plan, but I'll take it.
I expect to level off at 1/2 to 1 lb per week.
I imagine that 10lbs is not actually fat loss.

Anyway, woohoo! I'm on my way.

Good work, Animated. 10 pounds within less 2 weeks ?? Geesh ... hard to do better than that. :-)

I am not very strict with the No Snack rule, I figure it's better to snack a lil' bit than to try to be super strict and then suffer ... and then maybe you get so hungry that you overeat by 1,000 calories within 10 minutes so you would have been better off with a small snack, just sayin' ... that's just my opinion. ;-)

I'll monitor out your daily check in as well since I can relate to your situation ... I'm 40 years old, male, 5'10", starting weight, sept. 1st, 210 pounds, current weight, 208.6 ... my goal is just to lose 10-11 pounds within 3 months at the moment ... but I lost 90 pounds within a year before, went from 280 to 190 (from 11-1-2008 to 11-1-2009), slowly gained 20 pounds over almost 3 years after that but now getting back under 200 again sounds pretty good to me. Maybe I'll lose another 5 if I achive my first goal. You can look at my daily check in for more info.

These low calorie tips help me a lot at the moment, remember it's better to have a small snack once in a while than to have a huge binge eating episode because you tried to stick it out and not have anything at all :

3 of my main 'tricks' lately to avoid overeating ... fruits, fills you up, hardly any calories. I always have an apple close by for emergencies. I like apples because you can keep them for a long time, even a few days, at room temp., no problem ...

2nd trick, chocolate soy milk ... what I do is I put approx. 200ml of soy chocolate milk in the biggest mug I have (and it's huge !) then I fill it up to the top with water so the entire mug doesn't have a lot of calories, it's 80% water, I put it in the microwave, 5 minutes ... I add half a 'sugar twin' and a tablespoon of cocoa powder ... good chocolate---y drink ... fills you up, hardly any calories and it takes 20 minutes to sip it since it's burning hot. If you don't like soy milk, you can get any other kind really. :-)

3rd trick, hard candy ... even the ones with sugar only have 15 calories and they take 15 minutes to finish, enough to make the big cravings go away and of course distract yourself from food ...
let me know your thoughts ...hope this helps you as well.

2 Bonus tricks ... exercising ... I'm not talking an hour, just 3 minutes is enough to curb my hunger, calisthenics, jumping jacks, push ups ... helped me a few times ... I am not hungry right after exercising even if it only lasted 3 minutes. I don't do that late at night though because it would prevent me from sleeping later on ... I only use that trick earlier in the day. ;-)

Sleeping it off ! Sometimes when I am hungry late at night, around midnight for example, I just go to bed and sleep it off ... the next morning I don't even feel hungry at all anyway. I try to go to bed early in general since 80% of the time when I overeat it is late at night, after midnight ... so getting to bed earlier really helps. I also have a rule when I go to bed I am not getting up to have a late night snack, so once I am in bed, that's it for the day, no exception.

Marc ;-)

Sept 9, Day 14: S DAY
Yesterday and today were actually pretty tame, for S days. HAd a piece of banana bread yesterday as a treat, and today I had a piece of cherry cheesecake that my niece made.

Marc: Thanks for the tips! I think I've got to be strict about the snacking at work, 'cause that's what got me into this rut anyway. I used to smoke cigarettes 10 years ago, and when I quit, I replaced it with snacking. So my addiction is well worked-in. I have used milk to curb the appetite, and I've also found that a bit of exercise helps too. My snacking also comes in strong in the evenings, so just going to bed avoids those wants pretty well too. 280 - 190 must have been quite a journey!

Deb: Of the two Indian placed I like to go, one is a buffet, with unlimited plates, and one is tapas, where your table orders many dishes, and you serve yourself. Both varieties make it difficult on the one-plate rule. But I think I'll have to tempt fate anyway. I can't go long without aloo gobi, paneer makhni or chicken vindaloo.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Sept 10, Day 15: SUCCESS!

Technically, there was a bowl and a plate for dinner... A small bowl of Pasta, and a plate of salad. I think that counts.

Lunch yesterday snuck up on me. I wasn't super-hungry the way I usually am. Dinner too.

I took my daughter to Halifax to visit my mum and my brother for Thanksgiving. Canadian thanksgiving, eh. So I didn't do my 3 5K runs for the week, and I didn't do my TKD classes. So no exercise except for surfing.

Oct 05, Day 41: SUCCESS! Friday, weigh day.
Oct 06, Day 41: S DAY. Flew to Halifax. Late lunch, late dinner.
Oct 07, Day 42: S DAY. Thanksgiving dinner. Not too gluttonous.
Oct 08, Day 43: S DAY. Thanksgiving day. No snacks, but I had a small bowl of ice cream for dessert.
Oct 09, Day 44: SUCCESS!
Oct 10, Day 45: S DAY. Went surfing. On vacation. Drank soda. Ate dessert.
Oct 11, Day 46: SUCCESS! Flew home. Did not eat the peanuts or cookies on the airplane.

Oct 13, Day 48: S DAY
Oct 14, Day 49: S DAY

And now I'm more motivated than ever. My 35th birthday is in 17 days.

It wouldn't be a big deal, but I REALLY want to see sub-210 on the scale.

I feel good, and I feel like I look better. Less flabby. Less unhealthy.

But that number on the scale won't drop! I guess that bunch of fast-paced weight loss I did at the beginning got my expectations inflated.

Oh well.
I'll stick to this No-S plan. And I'll keep running.

And see where that brings me.

You lost 10% of your body weight. That is great! Relax for a bit. Work on sticking to the rules for the sake of sanity and health. I lost 10% of my original body weight in the first 4 months and the next 10% took 8 months. I spent year 2 just maintaining even though I am still 25 lbs over goal. It is now year 3. I still want to lose that 25 lbs, but I am so much better off than I was 2 years ago. Good luck!

Thanks r.jean.

I am thrilled with the results so far.
I should just relax. And stick to the rules.

I like your signature.

Take it from someone 3 years in, what you want (more than to weigh a certain amount) is to be eating meals consistently, and to aim at eating little enough at meals OVER TIME that you are legitimately hungry for those meals for an hour, maybe two, before you eat them. I've found I've had to keep adjusting my meals. When I do, weight loss follows. But the few times I tried to rush it, pendulum swing.

That way, when you get there, it will just be how you eat.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm finding that my patience is inconsistent when it comes to weight loss. I've been very happy with how I feel: healthier than I did a few months ago. But weight is another thing.

I did have a good system of only weighing in on Fridays, but I've allowed myself to step on the scale daily recently. Maybe I need to go back to a strictly weekly weigh-in...

If the results frustrate you without changing your behavior, consider reducing weighing to once a month.

Alternately, weigh every day and average the results once a week. I did that for years (though I was on an upward trend almost that whole time).

Hey, thanks all!

oolala, I think I'm going to ask my wife to hide the scale again. I didn't weight-obsess the last time she hid it.

My system for weigh-ins (if I'm in charge) is:
Only weigh yourself on days ending in y.

When they said "take off, eh, hoser!" did Bob & Doug mean weight??? :D

From one Canuck to another Canuck in the great white north: You are doing great, eh!!! Congratulations.

The real bonus is how great you feel!!

Yeah, thanks eh?

Sometimes noS feels difficult. I feel hungry for some snacks. But then I realize that there's a maximum of 8 hours between my meals, and there's no possible way that a human can die of starvation in 8 hours.
And I know that even if I'm close to starvation, a Reese's peanut butter cup might be tasty but it won't provide me with nutrients enough to fend off starvation.

And making another new hole in my belt is much more satisfying!

So I've been sick, and I've thrown out my back. So most of my exercise is on the backburner. Been out-of-commission since last Wednesday.

I've stayed on no-S though, but my portions have been unreasonably big. Trying to eat myself better I guess.

Anyway, here's the check-in:

Feb 08, Day 163: SUCCESS!
Feb 09, Day 164: S-DAY
Feb 10, Day 165: S-DAY
Feb 11, Day 166: SUCCESS!
Feb 12, Day 167: SUCCESS!
Feb 13, Day 168: SUCCESS!
Feb 14, Day 169: SUCCESS!
Feb 15, Day 170: SUCCESS!
Feb 16, Day 171: S-DAY
Feb 17, Day 172: S-DAY
Feb 18, Day 173: S-DAY

I skipped my weigh-in on Friday too. Probably 'cause I know I'll have gained.
I have a half-marathon in 2 weeks. I need my back to get better so I can get in my training runs.

Mar 03, Day 186: S DAY

Yesterday I did my first half-marathon. The experience was amazing. I finished at 2:01:59, and it was definitely the toughest run I've ever done.

I'm super proud of myself. I know I'll continue with running, as it's the only time I get to be alone with my thoughts, and it's great exercise too!

Marathon? Wow! I am trying to get through a 10K in early April even though the very frigid spring is interfering with my running! You had a gratuitous time for the half. Good luck on the full!

Yup. The cold does provide a motivational challenge. I'm only cold for 5 minutes at the beginning though. I NEED springtime! We just got a bunch more snow the other day.

In September I did a 10k run - my first in years. And it got me hooked. I found a good training plan that increased my mileage very gradually.

The marathon will be a serious challenge. I did a half marathon a couple of weeks ago, and that was not easy at all. But I'm motivated for this.

10k is a great challenge! Keep at it r.jean!

I haven't been too focused on noS lately, but it's stuck so well that I rarely ever have a "failure". Occasionally I decide to have dessert on a Friday evening, but those are usually premeditated acts, and they don't make me feel like I've failed.

So I'd say I've been 95% successful ever since I stopped tracking daily back in March.

I've been hovering around 205lbs. I'm relatively happy with that, and I feel great.

I've given up some of my weight lifting workout in an attempt to feel great until my marathon next weekend. Then I'll taper my running down to 20 or 25Km per week, and pick up the weights again.

I'm not really that bothered by my weight or my appearance lately. I could still stand to lose a few pounds, but I feel better than I did in high school, or any other time in my life. And that's what it's all about, right?

Marathon successful!

4:58:00.
Way slower than I wanted, but my knee informed me that it wanted to stop.
The course was wicked hilly. I trained no hills. My knee was all: "WTF is this?? You didn't tell me there were hills."
I told it: "Knee, you're attached to me, and I'm finishing this marathon."
The knee said: "OK, but I'm going to make it terrible for you the whole way."
So we made a deal. The knee whined and complained the whole way and I got to finish my first marathon.

There's loads of room for improvement on my next marathon.
