Bella's Daily Check In

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Bella's Daily Check In

Post by Bella75 » Wed Aug 31, 2011 6:41 am

I am awake at 3 AM because I am pregnant and pregnancy does weird things to your body. I figured I may as well start my check-in thread.

I'm excited! I have been praying for self-control and freedom from this nagging gluttony. I've relied on my old methods for so long and none of them have worked. I need a lifestyle change and a change in my thinking. No S came to mind after I was praying yesterday. It's simple; less restrictive than other plans; adaptable to real life situations; healthy (as healthy as I make it); requires no calculating; requires no special foods; and requires no explanation when eating with others.

I have two habits I need to form:
1. controlled eating
2. consistent exercise

For the eating, I'm keeping it simple. I am following the No S plan. I have nothing to add or subtract from the 4 guidelines.

For the exercise, I'll start with 15 mins on the treadmill two days a week followed by a few toning exercises that are helpful during pregnancy. Eventually I would like to exercise 30 mins at least 5 days per week. I'll get there one day.

That's it. That's my plan and I'm sticking to it!

Welcome! I think you're gonna love No-S! When and IF I get pregnant again, I plan to continue on No-S throughout the pregnancy. Nothing is off limits. I know how bad those cravings can be. But that sugar will taste so much better on S days!!!!

See ya around!

Welcome!!! I think this is a good solution for gluttony myself and even through pregnancy. My ob is an older man and he suggested to eat three large meals during my pregnancy and it worked for me. through all four I usually gained only twenty pounds. My problem is after they are born!!!

I am feeling very confident about this! I don't think I've felt this way about starting any other plan in the past. There was always a bunch of dread and excessive planning. This is so easy. The only planning I need to do is to figure out which two days to start exercising.

I've rethought my exercise goals. I was thinking how lazy it is of me to feel that I can't exercise 15 mins Mon - Fri. I can sit on the computer for 3 hours straight or watch tv for 2 hours straight. So, my new fitness plan is as follows:

Mon, Wed, Fri-- Walk 15 mins
(work up to 30 mins and gradually increase speed)

Tues, Thu-- Complete toning exercises
(gradually increase number of reps)

Thanks for posting a couple scriptures on the Off Topic posts..I love those 2, especially the no condemnation.

So for yesterday's S day gone wild...no condemnation for me...we all know where condemnation leads one..

Love your new fitness plan.....will help with your labor toooo.....

Hey NoSnacker,

I like talking about the scriptures. They are living words. I need to remember "no condemnation" after today's eating...*sigh*

Yes, I start the fitness plan tomorrow. I have to remind myself to start small and stay committed rather than start big and burn out quickly. (HEY, I think that will be my signature motto!)

I found these great definitions. I never really thought about the meaning of these two things. But I'll have to ponder these definitions.

What is will power?
It is the inner strength to make a decision, take action, and handle and execute any aim or task until it is accomplished, regardless of inner and outer resistance, discomfort or difficulties.

It bestows the ability to overcomes laziness, temptations and negative habits, and to carry out actions, even if they require effort, are unpleasant and tedious or are contrary to one’s habits.

What is self discipline?
It is the rejection of instant gratification in favor of something better. It is the giving up of instant pleasure and satisfaction for a higher and better goal.

It manifests as the ability to stick to actions, thoughts and behavior, which lead to improvement and success. Self-discipline is self-control, and it manifests in spiritual, mental, emotional and physical discipline.

The purpose of self-discipline is not living a limiting or a restrictive lifestyle. It does not mean being narrow minded or living like a fakir. It is one of the pillars of success and power. It bestows the inner strength to focus all your energy on your goal, and persevere until it is accomplished.

(Source: http://realgoalgetter.com/479/success-habits-
developing-will-power-and-self-discipline/)

I found this interesting contrast between discipline and self-discipline.

“Teach a child discipline and you teach him how to perform in front of others and do as he is told. Teach a child self-discipline and you teach him how to act with responsibility and integrity at all times, no matter who is watching, instructing, or disciplining.â€

(Source: http://www.faithwriters.com/article-det ... p?id=32252)

I never thought of discipline and self-discipline as being different but they are. And I realize I have discipline in many areas of my life. It is cultivating self-discipline with regard to eating that is the problem. I can discipline myself to not eat certain things in front of my husband but I need the self-discipline not to eat the same things when he is not around.

Wow this is great stuff...I think I'll copy it over to a word doc and print it..yes same as the strictness that Reinhard talks about in his book.

But I like the self-discipline, this will help build out habits!!!

Thanks for sharing.....

I had a blow out weekend at 2 parties, so glad it is Monday, even if holiday, just another N day to me..

Have a great week...

How far long are you?

What are you learning so far about No S. Did you say you got the book or ordered it?

I had a pretty nice day so far..still debating about dinner..but it must be something that I totally enjoy!

Here's to another successful week!

Hi NoSnacker,
I am feeling really good! Eliminating sugar makes a huge difference in my energy levels and the intensity of cravings! There have been none the last couple days.

I have ordered the book. It has not arrived yet.

For me, this plan is a tool to help me discipline my will but ultimately my prayer is that the Holy Spirit will enable the fruit of self-control to manifest in my life and to be delivered from this spirit of gluttony so that cravings and binges are not an issue. I will go day to day without those things ever having control over me just like all the other sins that are no longer have control over me (because gluttony is a sin). I know self-control is inside me but it is still growing.

22But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness,

23Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [[f]that can bring a charge].

Galatians 5

I have 5 months to go. The second trimester is not as intense as the first.

Self-discipline can be considered something the Holy Spirit instills in us, don't you think?

I know what you mean about gluttony being a sin, and an obvious one at that.

Sometimes it is not about the food but about what has happened to us in our past and has to do with emotions, buried and some quite obvious.

Perhaps if you work with the Lord on healing the pain of the past, you will be set free.

Many blessings to you.

I agree gluttony is a sin though it seems taboo to say it sometimes.
I could of written word for word what you said. These weaknesses are an opportunity to grow closer to God because we need Him more. Not only to ask for help but to be grateful for the good days.

I haven't been posting daily but I'm doing great! I feel great! My cravings are under control. I'm pressing on. I've no intention of stopping the program. It is sensible and enjoyable.

My weight is still holding at 183-185. I'll be sure to discuss with my OB the next time I go in.

Hi, I hope all is well and I did get off for a week, but found that I have no accountability, not that I'm accountable to anyone on this site, but I think you know what I mean.

I think I'll come back again, just limit my time on here.
