D -- Penne w/ homemade meat sauce, salad, Coke Zero
Exercise -- 3 + miles walking
Tuesday morning weight: 138.8
I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, the first full physical I've had in a good while, and I'm a little nervous about it. My weight is about 11 pounds higher than it was the last time I went and I wonder if my PCP will comment about that. I am within the healthy BMI range, albeit toward the higher end of that range for my height. Well, I'll try not to worry about it. I'm feeling good and I'm definitely shrinking ... there's a visable difference between where I am now and where I was a month ago.

Wednesday morning weight: 137.4 ... I expect to see a monthly gain soon.
Dr appt this morning basically went OK ... got a few shots and the nurses had a heck of a time drawing my bloodwork which is typical. My PCP happily approved of the No S diet and said that it is basically what she would recommend combined with sticking to actual foods (as opposed to man made food products) as much as possible. A la Michael Pollan, I guess. (I know that my biggest weakness in that regard is Coke Zero which I have been drinking as a pick-me-up in the afternoon ... and sometimes at other points in the day. ) Other than that, she is checking my thyroid and wants me to see a specialist again for a chronic pain condition.
I ordered some fish oil supplements for me and DH this afternoon. Neither of us care for seafood but I know that Omega 3 benefits are helpful. When these arrive, I'll be taking them daily but probably won't list them in my food diary. The packets are 30 calories, though.
Also, as of last night, I'm graphing my daily morning weight on Fitday. I think it will be useful to "see" trends over time.

Sunday morning weight: 137.4 with temporary monthly gain, etc. Yay!
Well, we've reached the end of January. My monthly resolution was, quite simply, to reestablish a Vanilla No S routine. I'm pleased with how things went. All of my N days were green with no failures. I enjoyed my S Days without, by and large, being an idiot. I'm feeling good. I've lost about 7.5 pounds since the end of the holidays.
My plan, of course, is to continue on with No S. I think keeping this log is useful and holds me accountable. I also think that making and eating homemade veggie-based soups on a regular basis works well and is enjoyable for me ... When I look back on it, when I studied in England during college oh so many years ago and lost some weight without even trying, I ate 3 meals everyday, including a bowl of vegetarian soup for lunch most days, didn't snack, enjoyed 45 minute daily walks and lots of urban rangering and indulged in a treat on the weekends. Hmmm.
My monthly goal for February is to increase my confidence as a driver (I do drive, within limits, and am a good driver within those limits but I'm also a phobic driver) by engaging in some driver's education -- through reading, DVDs, etc -- for at least 14 minute on N days. I'll mark whether I've met my goal each day by indicating a sucess or a failure within this log.

Wow! Your progress is fantastic. 7.5 lbs! I am hoping to lose 3 or 4 this month. Our weights are similar. How tall are you?
I bought a new scale after Christmas and it weighs about 5 or 6 pounds more than my old expensive Health-o-meter. I'm still not sure which is correct. My doctor's scale weighs the same as my old one. I have been using my new, fancy digital one for purposes of No S, but it is depressing because that weight is so much higher than my old scale. Poor me.
I am going to keep watching you because you seem to be doing it right!

Often go moderately low carb because that is how my husband chooses to eat.
Glad to be back!

I'm short. Only 5'3" ... So currently at the higher end of the healthy BMI range for my height. Like you, I'm hoping to lose 3 or 4 pounds in February.
That's so frustrating about your new scale. If your old expensive scale and your doctor's scale were the same it seems like the new one might be off. Hmmm ...

Hi Katie! It is nice to meet you and thanks so much for your nice comments. Do you have a certain weight loss goal in mind with No S? In the past 4 years, I've been everywhere between 112 (too low for me) and 145 (definitely too high for me) ... At this point, I'd love to get out of the 130s and then see where my body settles naturally with a consistent moderate diet (good 'ol vanilla No S) and consistent moderate exercise (mostly walking) ...

Absolutely! I'll be checking your thread as well.Katie wrote:We are so much alike!!! My lowest was 104 (most definitely too low) and my highest is right now at 140. Last year at this time, I had settled in nicely at 117 to 122. That was comfortable and maintainable. We can so do this!!!! I'll keep checking your thread

D -- Leftover beef stew, Red lobster biscuits

There's a probable chance that I'll make tomorrow night a NWS and keep Saturday green. DH and I have the offer of a sitter and thus a rare date night. We are talking about going to a nice restaurant for dinner and I want the option of dessert.

It was an OK S day but feel a bit icky/like I overdid it. I didn't eat enough fruits or veggies and I missed getting a workout in. I'm looking forward to getting back on track with a Green Day tomorrow.

This has been a strange week in that, between sick, teacher professional and snow days, tomorrow will be the first day that DD has actually gone to school. Other than running a few errands Monday morning and snow shoveling, I've been homebound with her all week. Fresh baked goods and hot chocolate are major temptations with snow days and we've had those goodies in the house but I've opted not to give in even when my family has had treats. Not always easy, though.
The scale seems to be fluctuating but I can see with my daily weight graph that the overall trend is downwards even if things aren't happening quickly. I'm hoping another steady loss registers soon.

I consider my February Resolution a success. I'm still a phobic driver but I learned some things which have increased my confidence and I felt empowered that I'm taking steps to work through this. Driving, and namely the fact that I'm a phobic freeway driver, is my biggest issue and one that I will certainly focus on in future months, perhaps many months, until I work through this ... but I'm going to wait until the weather improves before I commit to the next steps.
For March, my Resolution is "Operation Get My Act Together" ... There is some essential paperwork that I really need to take care of (wills and the like) and there are a couple appointments that I really need to schedule and have put off tackling. No longer! Each N Day in March I will spend at least 14 minutes focused on working down my list. I will note that there is some chance that I may wind up on Jury Duty this month and, if that happens, I will count Jury Duty as meeting my resolution for each N day served.
Some monthly weight loss stats from February:
Start Weight: 138.8 lb on 02/01/2010
End Weight: 136.4 lb on 02/28/2010
Total Change: -2.4 lb
Avg. Weekly Change: -0.6 lb
Maximum Weight: 138.8 lb on 02/01/2010
Minimum Weight: 135.4 lb on 02/27/2010

I haven't measured myself at all but I'm definitely losing inches. I can tell by how I'm looking and how my clothes are fitting. My family has noticed as well. The other day, my daughter said "Mama, you are getting smaller. I think you're shrinking." This morning, when we were hugging good-bye, my DH said "Wow! You are getting so skinny!" Now, I'm pretty short at 5'3" and I'm certainly not super skinny by any means, but I am happy that I'm making progress even if the scale isn't showing dramatic drops.

Well, I had my first botched N Day since restarting No S at the end of December. It was pretty stupid, really. I was making this sesame seed candy for the kids to sample as part of an American Girl enrichment I'm teaching at DD's school tomorrow. Long story short, I made a mistake with the first batch, burned a couple of my fingers pretty badly and messed up my kitchen. Then, I made another batch and, frustrated, ate a piece of the darn stuff ... and it wasn't even S worthy, IMO. When DH got home, he took one look at me and the mess and suggested that we go out for dinner instead of eating our planned leftovers. So we did.
The good thing is that I did not allow this Failure to turn into a full-fledged binge. I laughed off DD & DH's suggestion that, since I had messed up anyway, we could all have dessert after dinner. No thanks. I'd prefer to have a dessert on Saturday, guilt-free.
Marking it red and moving on ...

I'm now down around 10 pounds since restarting No S right before the New Year. Yay!
My primary goal is to get to 130 and then just see where No S and my moderate, consistent exercise routine takes me. I took a "Happy Weight" quiz on self.com a month or so ago and based on my answers, it said that my "Happy Weight" is about 130. It's funny because when I first discovered No S in November 2008, I weighed about 130 and wanted to lose 5-10 vanity pounds. My aspirations are different now. While I certainly wouldn't mind weighing 120-125, I'm far more interested in having a goal weight that I can reach and maintain happily/relatively easily. 130 is about 11 pounds from the high end of the healthy weight range for my height. Good enough that I can fit comfortably into my size 4s and not have to be self-conscious when I step on the scale at the doctor's office. LOL.

I've decided that I'm going to add a distraction management habit to my Habitcal: weekday and weekend luddite. Surfing the web is my major distraction of choice so my goal is to moderate this behavior. We'll see how it goes.
Weekday Luddite
* No surfing the internet between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. with the exception of lunch hour. I have 3 of my worst offender distraction websites listed on a Post-It on my computer. With these 3 websites, I am not allowed to go on at any time between 9-5, including during lunch break. Email and iTunes are permitted throughout the day as these are not major distraction issues.
Weekend Luddite
* No surfing allowed from after breakfast until after dinner. Email & iTunes are permitted.

Weekday luddite -- FAILURE Still working on it.
I finally replaced the battery in my pedometer last weekend and have been wearing it daily. When I'm consistent about wearing the pedometer, it really makes a difference. It gives me the extra incentive I need to lengthen my walk just a tad and get moving a little more while doing housework, playing with the kiddo and running errands. I'm reading "Pedometer Walking" which says that you should aim for at least 10,000 steps a day/70,000 steps a week for decreased risk for illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer and for moderate weight loss and that you should aim for 12,000-15,000 steps a day/84,000-105,000 steps a week for long-term good health and more noticeable weight loss.

Sick with bad sore throat, body aches and low energy. No exercise. Had the luxury of taking a couple naps. Didn't worry about food choices but there wasn't anything completely idiotic. I did take in a lot of sodium due to salt rinses for the sore throat.

Some thoughts about March:
In terms of No S, I am exceedingly pleased and excited about my progress. The No S habit is becoming well engrained, I only had one small failure this month, I'm within a half pound of my initial goal ... and I'm hopeful that I'll be seeing the 120s again in the near future. Yay! I attribute the higher weight loss in March, in large part, to wearing my pedometer and upping my everyday movement a bit.
In terms of my March Resolutions, I overextended myself by trying to take on too much. My primary goal was project-oriented ... teaching a 3 week enrichment course at DD's school. It wasn't life-shattering so far as personal growth but it meant a lot to my DD and I know the teachers and other kids appreciated it as well. Then I added weekday/weekend luddite and pedometer wearing. The pedometer wearing has been a huge success and the luddite was more of a struggle and fell by the wayside when I got sick. Lesson learned: stick to a moderate monthly goal and focus on that. I'm sure I'll take on weekly/weekend luddite in the future but my April resolution is driving related since that is a more of a pressing problem.
Some weight loss stats from March:
Start Weight: 136.8 lb on 03/01/2010
End Weight: 130.4 lb on 03/31/2010

Hey there. Your daily check in is giving me alot of inspiration. I like the way your S days end up and am going to try to model them tweaked a bit to work for me. I'm thinking about starting my own daily check in. Does it take much time? Have you noticed it being helpful to stay on track?
Thanks
Denise

Hi Denise -- Oh, thanks! ... I do find keeping the log to be helpful at this point. I like to be able to track what I've been doing over time. It also helps me to be accountable. I plan on continuing with it at least until I reach and maintain a consistent weight and perhaps longer if it continues to be useful. It doesn't take much time, usually a few minutes a day.

4/2/2010 -- N Day -- SUCCESS
B-- 1/2 bagel w/ cream cheese, coffee
L (Salsarita's) -- 1 bean taco, 1 steak taco, some tortilla chips w/ salsa/queso, Coke Zero
D ( McDonald's) -- Cheeseburger, small fries, part of a kiddie-sized Diet Coke
Exercise -- Over 15,000 steps
Friday morning weight: 129.6
April resolution: EXEMPT
We were out all day doing family stuff and ended up eating out twice. Seriously lacking in the veggie/fruit department obviously.
Had my first glimpse of the 120s in well over a year today. I suspect it won't stick right away, especially with the eating out and S Days/Easter coming up, but cool nonetheless. Next step is to continue on the current course and see where my body settles in terms of weight. I'm good with whatever at this point. I'm solidly within the healthy BMI range for my height, am fitting into my size 4s and feel comfortable in my own skin.

Hi Shannon!
I too wanted to let you know I've been enjoying reading your No S check in for the past couple of weeks and I am sooo envious! Your progress is absolutely AMAZING!!
I've been stuck (unfortunately) at the same 160 lbs - sometimes even gaining a pound or two - since December of last year. I started No S at 170 lbs and lost the 10 lbs fairly quickly. But since then.... sigh!
If I am being perfectly honest, I do still have a habit of nibbling unconsciously in the evening. Nothing major as in nothing like I used to be before No S i.e. all out bingeing - but a little bite here and there and I don't think I do enough exercise either. I really liked your advice on another thread of not keeping sweet foods and snacks in the house and perhaps I should try this (again!) I always get tempted when I go to the store and use the S Days excuse for buying snacks, telling myself I'll keep them for the weekend etc.
Sorry this is so long but I just wanted you to know I find your posts very inspirational and look forward to reading them.
Best wishes and thanks from Roxanne (aka Roxy) xx

Hi there Roxy! Thanks so much for your kind words! ... I like reading the threads too. I find it fascinating to see how folks are making this very versatile way of eating work for them.
The dreaded plateau, huh? I've been there, too, unfortunately. I think your plan to stop the nibbling could really help. I once read that every nibble can be 25+ calories and that can add up. I remind myself of that everytime I'm tempted to take a "taste test." Beyond keeping green days green, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that making small adjustments like bumping up the exercise, opting for lighter meal options sometimes on N Days, etc can make a big difference and be enough to get the scale moving downwards again.
In regards to treats, I actually do usually have some of that stuff in the house. The freezer is my best friend in that regard. I've found that I can bake homemade goodies for my family and not be tempted if they are in the freezer. Also, my DH, who does not have a weight issue and is more of a snack than a dessert guy, likes to have chips every so often so we usually have those around too. I could take or leave most snack foods so these don't bother me. But if I thought any food item was a major problem for me, I wouldn't hestitate to get rid of it and reserve it as an "out of the house" treat.
Hope that you're having a wonderful weekend,

4/3/2010 -- S Day
B (local pie place) -- Piece of cherry pie, coffee
L (local old fashioned sub place) -- 1/2 of small turkey sub w/ lettuce, tomato & mayo
D ( on my standard 9" plate) -- other 1/2 of sub from lunch, carrot, small portion of chips w/ a little french onion dip on side
Exercise -- Over 13,000 steps, including 45 minutes skiwalking
Saturday morning weight: 130.4
April resolution: Exempt
A couple of observations:
1.) My family enjoys eating out. I thoroughly enjoy cooking and we like eating at home too but eating out feels like a "treat." I've noticed that we have a tendency to eat out more when DH is on vacation. No judgement here but it is something for me to be aware of ...
2.) I'm observing that what Reinhard says in the "S Days Gone Wild" podcast is really becoming true for me. Over time, my tolerance for excess has gone done. I'm finding that I don't need as much food to be full or satisfied.

Re: S days gone wild and eating less sweets over the weekend, how long do you estimate it took you to have more moderate weekends. And also, do you find if you enjoy your food more during the week for your meals that your less likely to have wild S Days?
I think your doing an great job.

I do think that having enjoyable N Days is a huge key to making this way of life work. With rare exception -- like when we take DD to McDonald's per her request -- I only eat food that I really like. Even my "lighter meals" for breakfast and lunch are foods that I'm very happy to eat. So, when S Days roll around, I don't feel a need to stuff my face. I eat what I want. I always make sure I treat myself to something really special on S Days as a reward, like today it was a yummy piece of pie. I think it took a couple of months of staying on habit before I really noticed that my appetite had decreased. My DH says that my stomach has probably shrunk. Maybe he is right.
I also think that everyone has "over the top" S Days from time to time. That's normal, especially on really special days like major holidays and birthdays. I plan to enjoy Easter tomorrow and not worry about it. There is a time for everything, including feasts. Monday will be green -- with N appropriate leftovers for dinner -- and that will be good too.
You know, I think after I started graphing my daily weight I became less anxious about S Days. I saw that while the scale tended to go up for a couple of days after the weekend, it always went back down and that the overall trend was downwards even if the weight loss was slow at times. This helped me to relax. Prior to that I was scared that S Days were going to ruin my progress and I wasn't able to enjoy them as much as I do now. I know that if I keep my green days green and am exercising consistently it all balances out.

That's really good to hear. About S days and how you've made this system work in your favor. Sometimes it's hard for smaller woman to make this work, but I think you've found what suits you, and I'm learning alot just from your progress. Thank You for taking the time to answer my questions. You have been a huge help. I feel confident that this will work for me and long as I'm honest and really follow the rules consistently.

Hi again Shannon!
Just a quick note to say thanks for your nice reply and again, your marvellous suggestions.... very much appreciated! All I need to do now is follow them through - easier said than done
Today I wasn't particularly hungry but for some reason or another, I found myself in the kitchen nibbling on my daughter's left over fudge. That fudge is truly my downfall... however, I really don't think I can ban it from the house, unfortunately since she makes it and other goodies from time to time for her school projects/bake sales etc. That having been said, I really liked your suggestion of freezing treats and I have been doing so recently. Its funny because there is a whole freezer full of frozen cakes and pies that I haven't touched but it gives me a kind of security blanket just knowing they are there if and when I need them. I think I read a similar comment from another member on another post about having treats on hand making her less likely to binge or panic buy in future.
My N Days are really pretty good - recently I've had an occasional slip up but as mentioned, nothing like I used to do. However, these little nibbles do add up as you said so I will need to try and curb my nibbling. Overall, I just wish I could get my S Days to be more in control and moderate so I could get to the stage where I enjoyed them more and not to fear them so much.
Anyway, hon - you are doing wonderful and I will continue to read your posts for as long as you continue posting since as I say, your posts are very inspiring and encouraging.
All the very best to you and yours and a very Happy Easter!!
Best wishes, Roxy x
