liz46's March Accountability

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Thank you Strawberry! I am eating much more than I'd planned today, but it's an S day and I am not going to sweat it! Hoping you're having a great S Day!

Thanks Liz. I am having a great day, I don't treat the S days any differently from the N, just try to eat right and exercise every day.(With a treat or snack now and then if desired). But I love Sundays in general as I love going to church.

Hope you enjoy your S day as well.

I look forward to getting to where you are with your S days. I found myself eating some things yesterday just because I could, but realized that I wasn't really enjoying them. These are things I want to start being more mindful of and only eat what I REALLY want!

I understand about loving going to church. We don't go anymore, but do study our bibles and enjoy certain services on TV. :)

As I posted in another post, it's been a bad three days for me and I almost decided to give up. But I'm going to quit giving up on myself. As I stated in that earlier post, I know this is the most sensible way to eat that I've found, same as we ate growing up. I won't stop here. Even though I've had three bad days, I'm back on track today. I have two more days this week to have green days and I will do it. I won't punish myself on my "S" days when they get here, by trying to turn them into "NS" days. I'm just picking up where I left off and make today the best green day I can! :)

Well, I stayed derailed on Thursday, but got back on track yesterday. Today is an S day so I'm going to treat it as such.

On a good note: Our bathroom scales finally bit the dust and I'm glad of it. Instead of replacing them immediately, I'm going to wait a while because I want to focus less on weight loss and more on earning stars on my habit calendar. :)

When you get derailed like that (I know, I've been there many times!) the only thing to do is just get right back up and move forward. So you've done the right thing!

Enjoy your weeked and hope things go better next week! :)

liz i think that's great to not replace the scale. i promised myself i would not get back on mine until april. now i'm thinking more like may. in fact, i may never get on it again. i can tell about where i am by how my clothes feel. and i may just keep using that as an indication of what i need to do.

MJ, Thank you so much for your post. I've been having the same thoughts lately. I used to be obsessed by the scale and put way too much stock into what is had to say. I agree with you about passing on the scale and that our clothes will tell us if we need to make changes. Thank you!

Liz, ditto on the scale. Why not experiment with using your waist or thigh measurement instead? It may not change as much or as often as people expect from the scale, but it is more realistic and the waist measurement is a much better indicator of health.

Or chuck both of them and stick with days on habit, as Reinhard recommends in the book.

Hang in there!

I'm so sorry for having been a slacker about posting! Thank you all for your nice replies and supportive comments!

A big YES to ditching the scales and anything related to weight loss. I will know by how my clothes feel.

The thing that's most important to me is I'm learning to finally have peace with food and with myself because of it! If I never lose an ounce, I'm just happy that I have my focus on other things in my life than eating.

Another thing I've noticed is that I no longer have the need to snack continuously, which I think I'll talk about in a new post on the board. This has been the biggest and most pleasant surprise of all!

Hoping all of you are having a fantastic NS week and enjoy your S days that will soon be here! :D

Liz, you are just beginning your insights and pleasant surprises. Those tough times may come again. We live in a land of constant exposure. There will bound to be times even this plan will seem unfair, and why does it have to be so hard, and yada yada yada. At least when you get back on the train, it's not some third class meager snack bar. Everybody still gets the whole menu to choose from.

LOL Oolala. I love the comparison to No S vs. other diets..the whole menu vs. the meager snack bar! That's so true! Thanks for the giggles this morning!

I know there are going to be tough times. I just had a very tough week last week and almost gave up then came to my senses! :)

Have a wonderful Friday and an enjoyable S day tomorrow! It's nice to have those to look forward to. I'm craving a piece of yellow cake with chocolate icing and a tall glass of cold milk on the side. It's nice to know we can still have our cake and eat it, too. :)
