I was watching Jeopardy! this evening (I like seeing how much I know). Alex Trebek made a comment on one of the contestant's "unusual" diet. He eats sensibly six days a week and on Saturday eats whatever he wants (sounded like an S day gone wild). In two years he lost 25 pounds. There was no mention...

Why not follow this eating plan with a goal of staying at 175 or less or just not gaining? To me a goal of staying at 175 means you'll want to gain if you lose weight.

I agree with you that 175 isn't an ideal weight for your height, but it's better than weighing more.

OK. I was wondering about a soup & sandwich lunch; guess that would be the same?
The short answer: yes.

I don't think the low-fat phase has passed at all, but I'm not sure if weight or health is the primary issue for most folks. I still see a lot of recipes that call for reduced- or fat-free products.

I read about the 13 virtues over 20 years ago, but had forgotten about them. Franklin admitted he was never abl...

I think both men missed something: it's not only what people eat but what they DON'T eat that is important. Populations that eat a so-called Western diet -- generally defined as a diet consisting of lots of processed foods and meat, lots of added fat and sugar, lots of refined grains, lots of every ...

I agree that the message to "keep stoking the fire" isn't homespun wisdom. It's a health claim and I'm not sure who put it out there first. I was looking for something else today and found this: “The real reason for health claims is well established: health claims sell food products. Marion Nestle

You don't need to resort to snacking simply because you're hungry. Being hungry doesn't mean you have to eat. Though we've been trained to act as if it is, hunger is NOT an emergency . I've found that I can feel hungry, but usually in a few minutes that feeling passes. IMO this attitude is largely ...

I don't think exercise helps in weight loss nearly as much as we've been lead to believe it does. When you look at how many calories are burned hourly doing various exercises or how many hours you'd need to exercise to burn off a treat, it's impact seems pretty negligible. It does have many other be...

I would caution against eating a large lunch in case dinner is late. Eat your normal meal. If dinner is delayed or you get hungry, you can have a glass of milk or juice. Then try to eat a normal dinner whenever you have it.

I voted to stick to vanilla No-S and no mods. It's not unusual to not lose or maybe gain a little initially.

You might want to look at what and how much you're eating. I think there's a tendency to load up plates to prevent being hungry between meals. You might need to take smaller portions.

Yes. It is possible to lose weight without exercise. I used to have a neighbor who couldn't exercise as the result of an injury and she lost about 100 pounds through diet alone.

While I've done the (very) occasional exercise program, the only exercise I've ever done consistently is walking.

Or, just eat the normal amount and don't be so full. Give yourself a chance to get used to that feeling. It may be a perfectly normal one we misinterpret as a need for food when it's not, just as we may have felt any little twinge or impulse to eat communicated a real need. Unlikely. When this happ...

I think as close as I've gotten to an energy bar is the occasional Lara bar. Or maybe a granola bar. I haven't had one of those in years and probably wouldn't be able to stand the taste of them now -- just like a lot of other things. Not only does real food rock, it spoils you for the crappy food.
