One of the lessons I took away from that book (in addition to all you mentioned) is that the goal isn't to get kids to like all foods, but to accept eating foods without complaint. They're not going to like everything, not everything will be a favorite, but they will eat (nearly) everything they are...

So if I skip a meal and eat at, say, 11 and 6 instead of 9, 2 and 7, then I think I might untrain my stomach. I don't think your stomach is trained to eat at any time; it's your brain that's trained to eat at specific times. I find it more difficult to eat three meals than two. I don't consider hav...

Also, another question...does peanut butter and jam toast count as a sweet? I had it for breakfast. It doesn't for me. However, you have to look at how much you're using. McDougal came across as a prejudiced, know-it-all, judgmental, opiniated, uncaring and rude medical doctor, with little understanding of the basic personal dynamics of obese people. Wow, I really enjoyed listening to that! Dr. McDougall was contentious, confrontational and personally insulting. You...

I clicked on the link and listened to the podcast but it was mostly a discussion of a high fat low carb book. I was interested in hearing Dr McDoougall since I did his program for several years but never did find him on the podcast. What did I do wrong? If you scroll down to 686 there's a picture o...

You don't need to resort to snacking simply because you're hungry. Being hungry doesn't mean you have to eat. Though we've been trained to act as if it is, hunger is NOT an emergency . I've found that I can feel hungry, but usually in a few minutes that feeling passes. IMO this attitude is largely ...

Thanks, everyone. I'm having a little bit of a hard time accepting how little I need, but I'll either get there or make peace with eating a bit more than I need. Glad to hear your report. I remember years ago reading that women (maybe all people?) needed to cut calorie consumption as they aged. My f...

Thanks for posting. I think the more we long-termers can post about the realities of success with NoS, in all its shades and variations, the more we encourage each other AND the newbies. I also think it is helpful for all of us women of a certain age (or beyond a certain age  ) to post about ...

Still losing
I've been here for over six years and I'm still losing weight here and there. Yesterday was my annual doctor's appointment so I had my yearly weigh-in. Down 4 pounds from last year! Last year I was down some, too, but I can't remember how much. I thought I'd posted it here, but when I searched yeste...

I don't think exercise helps in weight loss nearly as much as we've been lead to believe it does. When you look at how many calories are burned hourly doing various exercises or how many hours you'd need to exercise to burn off a treat, it's impact seems pretty negligible. It does have many other be...

Every now and then I have a day like this. It causes Peggy Lee's song to go though my head, "Is that all there is?" I just bite the bullet and keep the day green, because if I don't it will be a food orgy. I do have red days now and then, a nibble here a there when packing lunches, making dinner et...

Or, just eat the normal amount and don't be so full. Give yourself a chance to get used to that feeling. It may be a perfectly normal one we misinterpret as a need for food when it's not, just as we may have felt any little twinge or impulse to eat communicated a real need. Unlikely. When this happ...

That's exactly what happens to me. It will last one to 2 days and then ill be fine. Also been happening with me every now and then since I started dieting. I've had this happen now and again for my whole life. I never know why it happens because there's never been anything unusual going on with my diet before it happens. I could see it if I'd been eating far less than usual in the preceding days, if I'd been sick or if I changed what I was eating -- bu...

I still don't find takeout disgusting. It depends on the takeout. I have takeout occasionally and often it's something I think I should feel guilty about eating! Takeout is usually a splurge for me; not something I'd want to do everyday. On the other hand, last week I had a great salad with some gr...

One of the reviewers of Chic & Slim recommended Entre Nous by Debra Ollivier. It doesn't look like it's specifically about eating habits, but it does look interesting.

Over the weekend I bought a copy of the June issue of More magazine. There were several articles I wanted to read, including one called "The Champs-Elysees Diet." Recently the editors of More spent some time in Paris. When they were back in NY, they were talking about how slim the 40+ women in Franc...

Does anyone know of any other similar books that discuss the French way of eating? Looking for a more adult perspective. Probably the closest thing would be French Women Don't Get Fat i by Mireille Guiliano or the Chic & Slim books by Anne Barone. The web sites might help you see if one or the othe...

That just sounds so freeing to be able to be okay about just weighing once a year and not worrying about the scale all the time. I would love to get to that place. I have CHF and am supposed to weigh daily to keep track of water weight gain and adjust medication accordingly. I don't need the scale ...
