I didn't go too nuts, though I snacked more than is probably good.

Well, if you're that nuts about cashews (heh, I crack myself up), you could always throw them into a chicken stir-fry. Diced chicken, broccoli, cashews, carrots, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, grated ginger... Fry it up in some peanut oil, throw in some sesame seeds and soy sauce then serve it over...

Day 11: Success Breakfast: Oatmeal Lunch: Bean soup, cheese sandwich, orange Dinner: Pizza. You know, a lot of pizza can fit on a 10" plate. However, in the spirit of the admonition not to be an idiot, I did not actually fill my plate. I was satisfied. I'm cleared to walk which means I can Urban Ran...

Ray, you know, I agree with you that maybe we're a little caught up in the futziness of nutrition. Humans survived an awful long time simply by eating whatever didn't run fast enough. Sure, there are things that we do need. Like guinea pigs, we don't manufacture our own vitamin c, so we really do ne...

Day 9: Success Breakfast: Bacon, eggs, toast, orange Lunch: 15 bean soup, orange Dinner: Oriental chicken salad, cheese sandwich I have no idea how far I swam yesterday. Breakfast and Saiety
As I move along NoSing, I've noticed my breakfasts becoming more and more substantial, and feeling less hunger between meals as the day goes on. Believe it or not, there's been a study about this: http://healthletter.tufts.edu/issues/2004-03/breakfast.html Now, I've always preferred a big breakfast ...

Day 8: success Still doing the "letter of the law" thing, and I'm probably eating too much sometimes, even so. Breakfast: Steak and eggs (stop looking at me like that. We were out of oatmeal and had leftover steak). Lunch: 15 bean soup, garlic bread, orange Dinner: 3 burritos (each made with a 5" to...

I count a normal sized bowl of soup as 1/3-1/2 of a plate, depending on how thick a soup/stew it is. I just put the salad on the plate. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO SEE A WEIGHT DROP EVERY DAY ON THIS. I weigh every day, but daily fluctuations do not bother me. I track trends of a month or more. You COULD j...

Day 5: S-Day Here's the funny part. I had three meals, no seconds and no snacks. I did make "Preacher Cookies" (an oatmeal fudge cookie that's delicious and quick), for a treat because we were having guests for dinner. I had a couple as dessert and enjoyed them very much! Yeah, the habit part does c...

About four and a half hours. Since I eat at seven, noon and between six and seven, you can see where that's an issue. It doesn't override my willpower, so I do wonder if it's merely retraining my appetite. I don't get hungry after dinner, though I do wonder if my usual "nightcap" fills in for a bedt...

Some observations
I started this No S thing because I was bored with low carb, but wanted some structure to my meals so I would not go back to any eating pattern that would cause me to gain back what I lost. I figured if nothing else, following the letter of the law would not permit me to overeat. I am amazed at how ...

ACK! My face is red. So she did. I think I went to Wal-Mart and got "the cheap one". It's serving me fine. I do HIGHLY recommend that you ONLY get a slow cooker with a removable crock. You can prep the night before, put it in the fridge, and then put it on in the morning. Not to mention it makes cle...

Re: Support Needed-- Habits gone awry!
I'm discouraged. I know I've been eating less than normal in the past few months of No-sing, but the scale just won't budge. Now, I'm not someone who has a whole lot to lose--15 lbs would put me back to where I was as a teenager--and maybe this just is the weight I'm meant to be. The scale weight i...

I work all day, too. I agree with you that all this fancy crap defeats the purpose! All of my crock pot recipes involve putting it on low first thing in the morning, then coming home to a cooked dinner. I don't use canned food all that much (I'm with Reinhard on the frozen veggies, though. Throw 'em...

Home Cooked Meals
One thing I am genuinely surprised no-one has mentioned is using a crock pot. I come home from work tired and hungry. But after a decent meal (which has often been simmering in my crock pot all day), I'm a little more refreshed. I would say that at least three evenings out of the week, I'll set up s...

Re: Alcohol Question
Hi! Am I supposed to have my 2 drinks with meals? Could I have them by themselves, for example to wind up after work and have my meal after I finish them? How about as a nightcap before I go to sleep? Thanks! I have my one drink when I'm relaxing with the word processor considerably after dinner.

Noel, I am just curious, why do you have white wine as an OK N-day drink but red wine as an S-day only drink? Does red wine have more sugar or calories than white wine? I am just wondering because I too enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day. I prefer red wine, but if white wine is more N-day-...

What if I limit them to a portion of my plate during each of my 3 full plate meals during S days? Or, if I want to, have meals of most or all sweets, as long as they are within the plate per meal limit. What do you think? 2) In my years of going to the gym they always said to rest for 48 hours between doing weights. Has anyone had problems or injuries shovelgloving 5 days in a row? I think the whole "rest between weights" thing is to encourage hypertrohy ("getting bigger"), rather than to prevent joint injury. You'r...

I enjoy a drink in the evenings from time to time, and was wondering if anyone else breaks alcoholic drinks into S or NoS drinks? I do. For me, my NoS drinks: Any hard liquor mixed with a diet soda or similar mixer. (Yes, I use artificial sweetners), a martini, any hard liquor "on the rocks", white ...

Re: ...and what about muffins? Other breakfast ideas?
I'm trying to think of more breakfast ideas, now that I really have to eat a full, proper breakfast. I'm wondering: are muffins off-limits? Is it OK to have a small, oat bran-apple muffin but not a big cakey blueberry muffin? Are muffins worth eating if they're not sweet enough to count as sweets? ...

Re: Feeling like Sisyphus
Hi, For once I'd like to be around 125, a healthy weight for my height (~5' 2"). It shouldn't be so bloody hard to chuck off 20-25 measly pounds, should it? --H I am afraid we short women often have a harder time of it. I have to work very, very hard to take off weight. For me, I find that putting ...

I had an anterior cruciate ligament replacement in my knee three weeks ago. If you don't know much about sports medicine, this is a repair that requires an enormous amount of physical therapy in rehab (45-60 minutes a day). Because my doc is being very conservative, he's not letting me off crutches ...

I'm also considerably over my "ideal" weight. I've cleaned up my diet, and have started working out. I wanted to do some strength training. Swimming is my exercise of choice. I work on a college campus and walk all over hell and creation, but at my weight, something that gets the heart rate up and i...
