Dear Silverfish, I find your story so inspirational because I am your age and sort of coincide with your statistics. Your progress is really something. When I was eleven years old, I went to communist Poland with my mother to visit my grandparents. To say the least, it was a shock for an American raised child. Things I have to remind myself of
I have found that revisiting Reinhard's home page is very helpful. It helps remind me why I need to stay the course here. Here is something in particular: 1) Ask yourself if you can imagine staying on a particular diet for the rest of your life. If not, don't bother starting, it is a waste of time a...

I was talking with my grandmother the other day. Musing about weight. She said something very interesting about my mom (who has struggled with weight her whole life). Dr. Rozin (I think that is the name) did a study and tested portions of food across Paris establishments including pizza parlors, chinese restaurants, fast food places, etc. He found that the mean portion size was 277 grams or 9.8 ounces. I once heard that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again while gaining the same results. I have had an extremely stressful situation at work and some at home as well. I am happy to report that I lost my appetite for about two days. Wasn't very hungry. The food I did eat was fast food (fatty and comforting). But... I did stick to one plate and I am walking today 4.5 miles. Yesterday: B=n...

P.S. I myself have toyed with the idea of going back to weight watchers. But I remember how hard it was to do all that counting. I never felt I could go out to dinner or cook something for my family. I know that weight watchers is not a lifestyle I can maintain. That is why I am not giving up on nos...

Don't even get me started on the no carb crowd. I have several where I work. They eat the cheese and pepperoni off of 5 slices of pizza. They eat those awful bunless burgers. All the while you have to guard your lunch because they look like any moment they will attack your sandwich and leave no surv...

I totally hear you. I have been really struggling with s days. And I think for women it is harder. We don't have the muscle mass that burns calories like men. When I go hog wild on the weekends, I don't lose. I am still trying to find the right balance on this plan. The balance of sanity, sometimes,...

100 smart diet tips
This is the title of an article I read. There were such tips as "brush your teeth after you are done eating" "eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables" "only keep things in the house that have less then 300 calories per serving" and on and on. Weight loss is painful enough. Who wants to remember 100 ...

I wouldn't count a sugar free breath mint as a failure. I chew regular sugar gum (one to two pieces a day) and they are about 15 calories each. I don't think that will impede progress. I remember a much earlier post where Reinhard said a teaspoon or two of sugar in your coffee is fine, so I'm sure t...

Maybe I should clarify: there is white bread and then there is white bread. If you have ever read the ingredient list on white bread in a supermarket (doesn't really matter what brand) it would make you cringe. It reads like a chemistry experiment: high fructose corn syrup, sugar, trans fats, modifi...

Yes, in a perfect world foods that are high in fiber will satisfy you longer: brown rice, whole grains, oatmeal, raw vegetables, etc. But.... the hedonist in all of us wants to eat white bread and other such sinful delicacies. So, I think if you are starting out, just put what you like on the plate....
