Sounds like your weight problems started when you stopped following a traditional French diet. When I lived in Europe I weighed so much less, and it is because the food was pure. Not full of chemicals and crap like here.

"Thanks, that looks great!" then....
"I'm not hungry now, but I will save it for later"

Then save it or throw it away or in my case I give it to a colleague who is a human garbage can (and never gains a pound)

Lifestyle change shouldn't be excruciating

I read somewhere that lifestyle change (e.g. diet, exercise, etc.) should serve to improve and make your life better, not make it miserable. And I think that is so true. If your diet makes you nuts and obsessed every minute of the day, it is not worth it. I have had brief flirtations with returning ...

I'm sorry if someone thought I was condemning the Atkins crowd. I know how hard weight loss is and how personal. I just get tired of the Atkins work crowd examining my lunch everyday. I guess what I meant to say is that you have to be careful what you say about diet (being that it is so personal).

I have always understood it as meaning, if you go out with other people and you don't want to look boorish by piling your meat, appetizer, fruit on one plate. You can visualize the amount that would fit on one, but eat in courses like everyone else.

100 smart diet tips

This is the title of an article I read. There were such tips as "brush your teeth after you are done eating" "eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables" "only keep things in the house that have less then 300 calories per serving" and on and on. Weight loss is painful enough. Who wants to remember 100 ...

I wouldn't count a sugar free breath mint as a failure. I chew regular sugar gum (one to two pieces a day) and they are about 15 calories each. I don't think that will impede progress. Yes, in a perfect world foods that are high in fiber will satisfy you longer: brown rice, whole grains, oatmeal, raw vegetables, etc. But.... the hedonist in all of us wants to eat white bread and other such sinful delicacies. So, I think if you are starting out, just put what you like on the plate....

Question for Johnny Quick,

I know diet books are blasting carbs. But if carbs are so bad, why do other cultures like Japan, China, Italy, France, etc. eat them and have less weight problems then us?
